How To Pressure Wash Your Roof

A clean roof is always attractive and can last for years. Moss is a common problem occurring on roofs. Dealing with the stubborn plants early enough can save your roofing material and structure from damage. You should know that you need some roof cleaning when you begin noticing stains on your roof. Moss and algae will show up as stains in the early stages of growth. A qualified contractor will protect your roof’s integrity when using a pressure washer to clean it. A controlled jet from a quality pressure washer can loosen the roots of moss attached to the roof. The mess is then washed down by water.

As a precaution, you should not stand on a wet roof if it has moss growth because it is usually very slippery. A professional contractor can use an industrial pressure washer to loosen and wash away the moss. Medium pressure should be used to clean the roof.

Before roof cleaning starts, plants and any fixtures right below the roof can be covered with plastic sheet to protect them from the mess. Roof cleaning with a pressure washer should start from the peak downwards. Professionals work in this direction to prevent the water pressure from blasting out tiles or shingles. The pressure should be medium to low for maximum roof protection. Your contractor can pressure wash your tiles with as little as 200 per square inch (psi). The washer’s wand can also be distanced at least 30cm from the roof until lumps of moss start falling off. If your contractor can’t hold his hand under the water spray, then the pressure is too high and needs to be adjusted.

Cleaning should progress with the low pressure in small portions. Your contractor will pressure wash the roof in small strips downwards and up again until all the moss lumps are removed. Rinsing is also done at low pressure to reveal a moss-free roof.

Moss and debris that has been cleaned from the roof will accumulate in your roof’s gutters and others may fall on the ground below. Your contractor can still use the pressure washer to flush out debris lodged in the gutters for a maximum clean roof. After your roof is clean and dry, your contractor can spray it with moss controlling agents to reduce the number of cleaning over the years.

It’s too late to save a roof with heavy moss growth because it is already weak and walking on it only increases the damage. It is better to deal with moss early enough when you notice stains on your roof. This will reduce the time and cost of cleaning a moss-laden roof.

A clean roof creates curb appeal and a healthy living environment which increase the value of your home in resale. It is always important to use the services of a professional roof cleaning company. You can find a licensed roof cleaner in your area online. A professional roof cleaner will take care of your roof and advise you on better ways to prevent moss growth and prolong the service life of your roof.
